The Yealm is in the final few weeks of its construction ahead of the official opening of the show apartment. Simon Friend provides an insight to the unique features of these stunning riverside homes and explains how there is something special for every buyer whatever they are looking for.

Individuality is a theme that runs through the heart of The Yealm. From its heritage as a well-loved Victorian hotel and local landmark to its sensitive restoration and transformation into 14 stunning apartments and one beautiful house, it is a place to live that is unlike anywhere else – and all with one of the most enviable views in the South Hams.

At The Yealm, purchasers are spoilt for choice. These are not your average cookie-cutter flats – every apartment is individual to cater for different buyers’ needs. Each has its own character and appeal, from decor to outside space. In fact, the only thing they all have in common is the breathtaking view!

 

The Main House

The former River Yealm Hotel has been sensitively converted into six two-bedroom apartments, all with designs that work with the building’s existing Victorian elements to create a traditional shaker style with a contemporary twist.

They are very grand, making the most of the high ceilings and the wonderful views. One apartment has a stunning tall ceiling in the living room, making it a great space for entertaining, while both of its beds have wonderful views.

Two others boast elegant master bedrooms, also with fantastic views from the bed. Another has a stunning living room with a kitchen-breakfast room that can be closed off with pocket doors, while its neighbour offers 180-degree views from its Victorian bay window in the living room.

For those who like an evening cocktail, one apartment provides a wonderful west-facing balcony for evening sundowners. Finally, our show apartment possesses what is possibly the best bathroom in the South West!

The ground-floor apartments have their own terraces and private gardens, the first-floor apartments have their own terraces and the top, second-floor apartments have their own balconies. Lifts serve the entire building and separate storage areas are provided at the lower-ground floor.

 

Yealm Wood

The four new apartments on the western side of the site have a more coastal, beachy feel. Yealm Wood was inspired from wanting to create a series of woodland hides from zinc, wood and glass. Two ground-floor apartments have their own private gardens and the two upper duplex apartments have balconies and roof terraces with stunning master bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms.

The building is curved and articulated to make the most of the wonderful views out over the estuary and it doesn’t disappoint! One garden apartment is flooded with light from its floor-to-ceiling windows and both of its bedrooms have views out on to the water. For those who enjoy their own space, the other ground-floor apartment offers a very private garden and access to the communal woodland area. It also has a light living room with lovely views.

On the first floor is probably the best apartment on the site with simply stunning views from the fantastic main bedroom and en suite bathroom. Next door is a really lovely, more private and self-contained duplex that enjoys beautiful views of the estuary and the woodland garden seating area. It also has a great bedroom with an extensive roof terrace and yet more views – an ideal spot for an evening glass of wine!

 

The Hide

Over at The Hide are four smaller hideaway apartments beside the former hotel building. Like Yealm Wood, the building is curved and articulated to take in the peaceful river and landscape, constructed from a palette of zinc, wood, soft render and glass to blend into its surroundings.

The two ground-floor apartments have two bedrooms and are compact, airy flats with fabulous views – perfect “lock-up-and-leaves” to suit those in retirement who like to travel. On the first floor are two great, quirky three-bedroom duplexes with three bathrooms. Both boast unexpected balconies and fabulous views. One, nestled under the canopy of a wonderful old beech tree, feels a bit like being in a treehouse!

All 14 apartments benefit from an extensive private woodland with a woodland garden seating area and woodland walk, a private shared jetty with direct access to the water and private parking on site.
