The saying goes that people don’t realise an acoustic engineer has been involved – until they haven’t! Well, we have been working with Red Twin Limited to design, analyse and control sound at the Yealm.
Based on their extensive experience of designing residential buildings across the UK and the Channel Islands, Red Twin was chosen to set out an appropriate standard of sound insulation, which has been set higher than the building regulations to reflect the luxury nature of the development, with a targeted improvement of +8 dB.
Red Twin has undertaken a pre-development investigation of the retained buildings at The Yealm to inform ongoing design advice in relation to sound and vibrations. Gavyn Bache and Ian Matthews from Red Twin have maintained close liaison with Simon Friend from Red Earth Developments, the architect and the wider design team during the early stages of the project to incorporate the necessary designs and components needed to achieve an exceptional outcome.

Ian Matthews, Director from Red Twin comments, “Working on the acoustics at The Yealm has been a complex task due to the acoustic design of the old building’s out-of-date construction methods and materials. We had a number of challenges to overcome during the design, including to devise new floor constructions that did not raise the finished height of the floor while still maintaining the desired performance.”

Simon Friend, Red Earth Developments comments, “Attention to detail is one of my main focusses for the Yealm. I want to ensure the acoustics in the properties don’t only meet the standard building regulations, but they go considerably further and they ensure, as far as the existing fabric of the building allows, that residents cannot hear other people in adjoining apartments and that sound is controlled.”
Red Twin will be back on site at completion to undertake the mandatory testing of the building for building control approval – sounds good to us! To find out more about Red Twin and work they have undertaken for other clients, please visit their website.
